My name is Kathy Akey. I am a young artist currently living in New York City and a graduate of the International Center of Photography’s MFA class of 2014. I make work about polar exploration, World War I, and early aviation.
I’m thrilled to have been accepted to the Arctic Circle Residency in 2015. For three weeks the other residents and I sailed together on an ice class barkentine tallship exploring Svalbard, a High Arctic archipelago just ten degrees from the North Pole, observing, creating, and collaborating.
Here I have recorded my preparations for the expedition, my time in Svalbard and the work I have made/am making in response to the trip. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have questions about me, my art practice or the Arctic Circle Residency.
